Booshoot Gardens
In the late 1990s, Booshoot Owner Jackie Heinricher experimented with bamboo propagation in her home greenhouse. She was especially intrigued by noninvasive bamboos because of their "flirty" nature: beautiful but impossible to make. After watching some of her specimens die, she persuaded Randy Burr, then an owner of B&B Laboratories with nearly 30 years experience in propagation (he discovered how to tissue-culture the Boston fern in 1973), to work on accomplishing the impossible with her. In 2004, the first 2,000 tissue-cultured bamboos left Jackie's wholesale greenhouse. By 2007 that number was 250,000.
The process of cloning through tissue culture has served its function exceptionally well for the nursery trade when a plant is difficult to multiply by traditional propagation. Bamboo is one such group of plants. Given the lengthy periodicity between flowerings, seed isn't a reliable tool for production.
Tissue-culture can also play an important role in plant conservation worldwide. As with many natural resources, bamboos are suffering from the pressures of growing populations and habitat destruction. Many species are either extinct or completely extirpated from their natural range. Tissue cultured plantlets can provide a means for bamboo-reliant countries to reestablish populations.
The most important program launch for us is our “Plant a Boo Save a Planet” campaign. Bamboo has so many remarkable qualities including sequestering far more CO2 than a similar stand of trees that Time and Newsweek recommend planting it to offset greenhouse gases. We have created a special marketing program to promote planting bamboo including a new plant tag, t-shirts, informative posters, and educational packets.
